F1 23 AI Difficulty: Qualifying vs Race

TL;DR: turn the AI up 2 or 3 points for the F1 23 race, compared to what you qualify at.

Every F1 game player says it: the AI feels faster in qualifying than in the race. So we checked. We went through every F1 23 weekend where a player ran qualifying and the race at the same AI difficulty and compared their grid slot to their race finish. The complaint holds up.

You finish higher than you qualify

2,907 F1 23 weekends, each comparing a player's race result against their own qualifying at an identical difficulty setting:

P5.53

average qualifying position

P4.63

average race finish

On average, players finish about 0.9 positions higher than they start. The qualifying AI is simply harder to beat.

How those races ended, weekend by weekend:

Turn the AI up 2 or 3 points for the race

Whatever difficulty you qualify at, add 2 or 3 points before the race starts. Players who made a small raise finished right where they qualified, so the race stays as hard as Saturday. Don't go further: players who added 4 or more points ended up behind their grid slot. And if it's qualifying that feels wrong instead, take the same few points off just for that session.

Average positions gained in the race, by how much the AI was raised over qualifying:

The gap grows with difficulty

Average qualifying position vs average race finish, grouped by the AI difficulty the weekend was run at. Lower is better. The higher you set the AI, the harder qualifying punishes you relative to the race.

Qualifying position Race finish
AI Difficulty Avg. Qualifying Avg. Race Finish Positions Gained
20–39 P2.5 P3.2 -0.6
40–59 P3.6 P4.3 -0.6
60–79 P5.7 P5.0 +0.7
80–99 P7.0 P5.5 +1.5
100–110 P9.4 P5.3 +4.0

Where the gap is biggest

The same comparison per track. A big positive number means players climb through the field on Sunday; a negative one means they finish behind their grid slot. That usually happens where overtaking is hard, so a strong qualifying AI hurts twice there.

How we measured this

Every number comes from telemetry real players upload to F1Laps. We paired each player's final qualifying session with their race from the same weekend, kept the pairs run at identical AI difficulty, and compared grid slot to finish. We count Career, My Team, Grand Prix and Championship modes on dry weekends, since rain scrambles results. Time Trial, multiplayer, sprints and DNFs are left out.

The race-difficulty recommendation comes from the weekends where players split their difficulty between sessions. Small raises of 1 to 3 points bring the average drift to zero, so your race finish matches your grid slot, while raises of 4 or more tip players behind it. It's an estimate (race results also absorb strategy, first-lap chaos, safety cars and AI mistakes), and we re-check it against new weekends automatically: if a game's data stops backing it, the recommendation comes off that page.

Common questions

Why is the AI faster in qualifying than in the race?

The AI's single-lap pace is tuned hotter than its race pace. Tyre management, traffic and small AI mistakes pull it back toward you across a stint, but none of that helps in a single flying lap. That's why the AI is harder to beat on Saturday than on Sunday at the same setting.

How much higher should I set the race AI than qualifying?

2 or 3 points, measured from players who split their difficulty between sessions. The F1 games let you change difficulty mid-weekend: set qualifying where you land your target grid slot, then nudge the AI up for the race. Lowering qualifying by the same amount works too, if your race level already feels right.

Is the gap the same at every track?

No. Where overtaking is easy, players climb well past their grid slot. Street circuits and other hard-to-pass tracks flip the effect: a poor qualifying locks you in, so the strong qualifying AI costs you twice.

Where does this data come from?

From real players' session results, captured automatically by the F1Laps telemetry app. Only complete, imported weekends count, and the page refreshes on its own as new races come in.
