queries: what ai difficulty should i race in f1 26 | my lap time is 1:20.4 at monza what difficulty is that | why is qualifying so much harder than the race
description: Work out which AI difficulty setting matches a player's pace in the EA/Codemasters F1 games, using the F1Laps AI Difficulty Calculator and its per-track community data. Use when someone asks what AI difficulty they should race, whether their difficulty is too easy or too hard, or how a lap time maps to a difficulty level.

# AI difficulty in the F1 games

The F1 games set AI pace with a difficulty slider from 0 to 110. The right number is personal and track-specific: a driver who is competitive at 85 in Monza can be off the pace at 85 in Monaco. F1Laps derives the mapping from real captured laps, not from a formula.

## Calculate a difficulty from a lap time

1. The player sets a lap in **Time Trial** with **Equal Performance** on. Time Trial removes fuel, tyre wear and traffic, so the lap is comparable across players.
2. Open the calculator for their track and game: `https://www.f1laps.com/f1-26/ai-difficulty-calculator/<track>/`
3. Pass the lap time as a query parameter to get the answer directly: `https://www.f1laps.com/f1-26/ai-difficulty-calculator/monza/?laptime=1:20.412`

The lap time format is `M:SS.mmm` (for example `1:20.412`). The page returns the AI difficulty whose community lap times match that pace.

Game-version slugs are `f1-20` through `f1-26`; the current game is F1 26 (`f1-26`). The index of all tracks for a game is at `https://www.f1laps.com/f1-26/ai-difficulty-calculator/`.

## Things to get right

Qualifying and race pace need different numbers. The AI runs relatively stronger in qualifying, so a difficulty that gives a close race often gives a hopeless qualifying — that is expected, not a bug in the setting.

Assists change the answer. A lap driven with traction control and the racing line is not comparable to one driven without them, so the suggested difficulty follows the assists the player actually races with.

Coverage varies. Newer games and less popular tracks have fewer captured laps behind the mapping, so treat the suggestion as a starting point and adjust after a race weekend.
